A Small Story with a Powerful Message
One morning a man is walking along a beach after a storm. Thousands of starfish have washed up on the sand and will die in the sun.
He notices a child picking up starfish one by one and throwing them back into the ocean.
The man says, “There are thousands of starfish here. You can’t possibly make a difference.”
The child picks up another starfish, throws it into the water, and says: “It made a difference to that one.”
Why Stelly Is CBL’s Mascot
Stelly the Sea Star was created as a symbol of hope, kindness, and the power of making a difference one child at a time.

Inspired by the beloved story of the starfish on the beach, Stelly reminds us that even when the needs of children and families feel overwhelming, every act of care matters. One gift, one service, one volunteer, one partner, and one moment of compassion can change the life of a child.

For Children’s Benefit League, Stelly represents the heart of our mission. Since 1946, CBL has believed that children facing illness, hardship, or barriers to care deserve more than support alone. They deserve comfort, dignity, encouragement, and the chance to thrive.

As a sea star, Stelly also reflects CBL’s Long Beach roots and our connection to the community we serve. Just like the starfish in the story, Stelly reminds us that hope becomes powerful when it is put into action.
